Astonishing images of birds calcified when they become immersed in the water of Lake Natron, northern Tanzania, by the photographer Nich Brandt.

Lake Natron takes its name from the naturally compound natron. It is made mainly of sodium carbonate with a bit of sodium bicarbonate. Lake Natron origin came from volcanic ash, accumulated from the Great Rift Valeey. Animals immerging in its water have a terrible destiny, they die and are calcified.
